1950s rhodium plated large round aurora borealis rhinestone with marquise clear rhinestones "leaves" clip back earrings. Marked "Carnegie" in script. Measure: 3/4 inches long by 3/4 inches wide. Condition: Very good; some light wear/speckling to backs. Made sometime after 1953, as that is when aurora borealis rhinestones were invented.
Hattie Carnegie was a fashion designer out of New York City whose designs were frequently featured in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar from the 1930s through the 1950s. Many famous actresses started off as models for the company including Lucille Ball, Betty Davis, Joan Crawford, Joan Fontaine, Betty Furness and Sophia Loren. Famous people including Ms. Simpson the Dutchess of Windsor and Mamie Eisenhower, were some of Carnegie's clients. Several designers started with Hattie Carnegie and started their own businesses to become famous in their own right, including Pauline Trigere and Jean Louis, who went on to Hollywood and made costumes for many famous films in the early to mid-20th century.
